Building Your Team

The Home Depot, Title Sponsor of the HBCU Battle of the Brains, is looking for candidates to join their software engineering team as full-stack developer interns and full-time employees; along with opportunities from additional sponsors and partner organizations. This desire will influence how the case teams will be solving will be comprised.

Software Engineering Skill Recommendations:

  • Exposure to front-end, back-end, and database management systems.
  • Agile software development approaches, specifically Extreme Programming (XP)
  • Pair programming methods and workflows
  • Collaboration with cross-functional teams and environments

With consideration to each of your institutional focuses, every team makeup will be different. Teams should have an aptitude and exposure to the initial details discussed; however, it is not recommended to send a team comprised entirely of computer engineering majors.

Additional, sponsors and partners organizations will look for candidates with various focuses and specialties, including:

  • Business
  • Marketing
  • Finance
  • Accounting
  • Digital Media and Design
  • Communications

With that said, teams can expect up to 50% of the case study to be technology-focused, and up to 50% involving other focuses, as noted.

Team Expectations:

  • Retail-focused case study with input by The Home Depot
  • Aptitude to address a comprehensive case study
  • Multiple deliverables throughout competition period
  • Finalists pitch product deliverables to a judging panel
  • Additional majors supporting technology component:
    • Information Technology
    • Mechanical/Electrical Engineering
    • Physics
    • Mathematics
